Russia's Luna 25 spacecraft, the country's first attempt to return to the Moon since 1976, has crashed into the lunar surface. The loss of the spacecraft was confirmed by Russian space officials on the social media network Telegram. The failure occurred during a burn of the vehicle's propulsion system, causing it to crash instead of moving into a "pre-landing" orbit as planned. The Russian space corporation, Roscosmos, will form an "interdepartmental commission" to study the mishap.
